Digital Desk: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare gave the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) the LaQshya certification for maintaining the standard of the labour room and maternity surgery theatre, making it the first government medical college in India's northeast to receive this recognition. This was informed by Superintendent of the medical college Dr. Abhijit Sarma.
Taking to X, Dr Abhijit Sarma posted, “Very happy to inform that GMCH got LaQshya certification for labour room and CSOT. First government medical college in the northeast to be certified. We are trying to go hard on quality control and patient safety. There may be slips which we are trying to correct as soon as detected!”
It should be noted that LaQshya is an initiative to improve the quality of labour rooms that was launched in 2017 by the union health ministry and is used to certify community health centres, medical schools, and other healthcare institutions for maternity services.
Each institution that receives a 70% or higher score is recognized as a LaQshya-certified facility under the program's National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) assessment of the labour room and maternity operation theatre.
The objectives of this program are as follows:
1. To lower infant asphyxia, sepsis, preterm birth, preeclampsia, eclampsia, retained placenta, obstructed labour, and other causes of maternal and neonatal death and morbidity.
2. To enhance the calibre of prenatal and early postpartum treatment, stabilize difficulties, guarantee prompt referrals, and enable a successful two-way follow-up system.
3. To increase beneficiary satisfaction when using the healthcare facilities and to give all expectant visitors to the public health facility Respectful Maternity Care (RMC).
