Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court on Monday reserved its ruling on the 2004 Dhemaji Bomb Blast, which happened at a playground during an Independence Day celebration, killing up to 14 children and injuring several others.
The final hearing of the case was concluded in court earlier today; however, the court reserved the verdict, according to reports.
It should be noted that on August 15, 2004, at 8.55 a.m., the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) triggered an explosion during Independence Day celebrations at Dhemaji College playground, killing 17 people, including several children.
Later in the year 2019, Dhemaji district and sessions judge Sutham Das convicted six people, including a woman, under relevant provisions of the IPC, including sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Out of the six convicts, four were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 each. Dipanjali Gohain, Muhi Handique, Lila Gogoi Khan, and Jatin Dowari have been identified as the four convicts.
Meanwhile, the other two accused, Prasanta Bhuyan and Hemen Gogoi, were sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay Rs. 2,000 fine.
Moreover, the lower court acquitted eight other accused, giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Following the judgment of the Dhemaji Sessions Court, the families of the victims moved to the Gauhati High Court.
