Digital Desk: Assam-based scholar, critic, and social activist Dr Hiren Gohain criticized Zubeen Garg on Friday for recent remarks about the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) and pointed out that he wasn't the only person who protested the act in the streets.

Gohain claims that participants in the demonstration came from all over the state as well as from different locations.

While talking to media he stated, “It was not All Assam Students’ Union or Zubeen alone who had participated in the CAA movement.”

While expressing his dissatisfaction, the senior social activist added that artist Zubeen Garg and AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya had a very unfortunate role in the CAA campaign.

"Though they may claim that they will not accept the contentious act, what did they do in reality? It is because of them the movement has weakened," Hohain further stated.

Gohain added that an increasing number of Assam's citizens are now living as beneficiaries; "they are unable to live with self-respect," he stated.

In Assam, the Assamese people are going through a financial crisis. In this case, Gohain argued, let the Assamese media report the truth for the state's citizens.

Earlier, Assam’s heartthrob Zubeen Garg told the media, "I was leading the CAA movement, but after I got sick and came back, I discovered that movement got weakened. Me, Samujjal Bhattacharya, and two other people are the ones who remain opposed to the controversial act. The political landscape has drastically changed, and it has finally been shown to be a political error. I now regret my reasons for fighting so hard. However, I want to be clear that I oppose the divisive Citizenship Amendment Act and will not, at all, put up with the legislation.”
