Digital Desk: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that he would take sides, and won't let 'Miya' Muslims "take over" the Assam. Sarma made this statement during an assembly session addressing adjournment motions from opposition parties concerning the law and order situation, particularly in light of the recent rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
In his response to the motions, Sarma argued that the crime rate has not risen when accounting for population growth. When accused of bias by the opposition, he replied, "I will take sides. What can you do about it?"
Sarma further asserted, "Why would people from Lower Assam move to Upper Assam? So that Miya Muslims can take over? We will not allow that."
The debate grew intense, leading members from both the treasury and opposition benches to storm the Well of the House, prompting Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn the proceedings for 10 minutes.
Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M) members, and independent legislator Akhil Gogoi had introduced four adjournment motions to discuss the rising crime rates in the state, including crimes against women.
