Digital Desk: In reaction to allegations of communal tensions and probable exploitation of social media platforms, the Manipur government has taken a severe step by suspending mobile data and internet services in the state for another five days. The move intends to reduce the spread of provocative content and false rumours, which endanger public peace and communal harmony.

According to a recent directive issued by the Director General of Police, skirmishes between volunteers and adolescents from different communities resident in the state have risen, culminating in arson attacks on houses and premises. Authorities voiced fear that anti-social elements would use social media platforms to spread hate speech, instigating public disturbance and worsening Manipur's law and order situation.

The ongoing fear of loss of life, destruction of public and private property, and broad disruption to public tranquilly and social peace has prompted immediate action.

Mobile data services and internet/data services, including broadband connections like Reliance Jio Fibre, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, and internet/data services through VSATs of Bharatnet Phase-II, have been suspended to prevent the spread of misinformation and false rumours via various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

This suspension order is governed by Rule 2 of the 2017 Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules. The goal is to combat anti-national and anti-social elements while maintaining peace, and communal harmony, and protecting public and private property from fire and vandalism.

The order, which takes effect immediately, is an extension of a prior office order and is made in the interest of public safety and the preservation of law and order. It will be in effect for the next five days, during which time mobile data services, internet/data services, and broadband connections will be restricted inside Manipur's territorial authority.
