Guwahati: The BTR Koch Students' Union (KSU) asked government to introduce Koch language as a medium of instruction at the primary level in Assam.
KSU stated that introducing the language at the primary level would protect the language from becoming endangered.
A committee led by the BTR KSU president, Rasan B. Koch, called on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Assam Administrative Staff College. He presented a memorandum asking for their 15-point agreement of demands.
The committee was accompanied by the All Assam Koch Students' Union president, Manaranjan Koch, and other members. The KSU expressed hope that the State government would discuss the concerns of the Koch community, who are indigenous people of Assam with their own identity, language, culture and tradition.

Rasan B. Koch stated the Koch community in Assam had been denied constitutional liberties and opportunities. He further said that Koch was the indigenous community of Assam.
However, the successive governments have not provided them equal advantages and status. Therefore, Rasan requested the existing state government to take essential actions for discussing their genuine requirements.
Apart from the demand of introducing Koch language as the medium of instruction, they have also demanded to provide land pattas to landless Koch people and employment opportunities.
The student union hoped that Assam CM Sarma would look into their requirements. They hoped that the Koch community would be recognized as one of the most primitive indigenous communities of the State.
