Digital Desk: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh stated on Monday (May 8) that over 1041 arms were looted by miscreants during the unrest.

In response to a question on the unrest in Manipur, he made this statement during a press conference.

''So far, just 214 weapons have been recovered out of the 1041 weapons looted by miscreants during the violence,'' he added.

Further, in response to a question regarding if there is a communal component to the occurrence because churches are being burned around the state, the CM stated that he cannot rule out the same.

''I don't believe that anyone is specifically targeting religious places. Because it is a public mob that is burning down houses and causing extensive damage to property and vehicles. That could be a factor, but I can't rule anything out. ''However, following an investigation, everything will be apparent about what actually happened,'' Biren Singh said.

The chief minister of Manipur further declared an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for individuals who died in the state's unrest.

''The government has decided to pay Rs 2 lakh to those who have been seriously injured, while Rs 25,000 would be paid to those who have suffered minor injuries,'' Biren Singh said during a press conference.

He further stated that Rs 2 lakh will be given to families whose houses were burnt down by the fire, adding, ''The Manipur government will build all houses that have been burned down.''

Speaking further on the violence, the Manipur Chief Minister revealed that over 60 people were killed due to the unrest.

Speaking about the arms that were looted during the violence, the CM stated that 1041 weapons in total were snatched by the miscreants.

He also stated that a high-level investigation into the violence would be conducted and that around 230 people were injured in the violence.
