Digital Desk: A distressing video from the violent hit state of Manipur shows two women, reportedly from the Kuki-Zo tribe, being paraded naked on the street by a group of men before being allegedly gang-raped in a nearby field.
According to reports, the horrific incident took place on May 4. A video of the despicable conduct, which depicts two Kuki-Zo women being paraded naked, assaulted, and groped by a group of males, reportedly from the Meitei community, appeared on social media on Wednesday. The women were allegedly later gang-raped in a field near the road.
In the conflict-torn northeastern state, which has seen extensive destruction and casualties since the start of ethnic violence in May this year, the disturbing video has provoked outrage and led to increased tensions.
On the eve of a scheduled protest march called by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) on Thursday to draw attention to their predicament, the video was making the rounds, according to news agency PTI.
According to the authorities, a case of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder against unidentified armed criminals has been filed at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district. They claimed in a statement that every attempt is being made to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
“As regard to the viral videos of two women paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on May 4, a case of abduction, gang-rape and murder was filed at Nongpok Sekmai police station (Thoubal district)… Investigation has started. The state police is making all-out efforts to arrest the culprits at the earliest,” Manipur Police wrote in a tweet.
The "despicable scene, which happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, shows men constantly molesting the helpless women, who cry and plead their captors," claims a representative for the ITLF.The decision of the criminals to post the video, which reveals the identities of the victims, on social media, tends to increase the horrible horror experienced by these helpless women.
The spokesman issued a statement condemning the "sickening act" and demanding that the national and state governments, National Commission for Women, and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes take notice of the offense and punish those responsible.
On Thursday, there is a protest march planned in Churchandpur, and the Kuki-Zo tribal people intend to bring up this matter as well.
Since May 3, there have been ethnic disputes in Manipur between the Kukis who live in the hills and the majority Meiteis who live in the Imphal valley. Over 120 people have been killed in the violence so far while internet services remain suspended.
It is to be noted that the Kuki tribe has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister.
