Digital Desk: An Indian Army soldier suffered injuries after miscreants resorted to unprovoked firing from Kanto Sabal towards the village of Chingmang in Manipur's Imphal West on the intervening night of Sunday, the army said on Monday.

"Armed miscreants resorted to unprovoked firing from Kanto Sabal towards Chingmang village during night of 18/19 June. Army Columns resorted to controlled retaliatory fire keeping in view presence of villagers in the area. One Army Soldier sustained Gun Shot Wound, evacuated to Military Hospital Leimakhong and is stable. Over 100 people have died in Manipur's ethnic conflict, which has been going on for more than a month.

Clashes erupted on May 3 during a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organised in Manipur's hill districts to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meanwhile, at least 196 people escaped to Mizoram in the last two days, bringing the total number of displaced people in the state to 11,699.

According to a Mizoram home department statement, the Kolasib district has 4,250 displaced people as of Sunday, while 3,825 have sought refuge in Aizawl and 2,845 in Saitual.

The remaining 779 people sought refuge in eight districts: Champhai, Lunglei, Mamit, Hnahthial, Serchhip, Siaha, Khawzawl, and Lawngtlai,  it said.

The state government and village authorities have established 35 relief camps.

However, the majority of the displaced people from the Zo ethnic communities are staying with family, while others reside in rented houses.
