Manipur violence: CRPF IG Rajiv Singh sent to conflict-stricken state, likely to get key post
According to a formal order, Singh, an IPS officer from the Tripura cadre who graduated in 1993, has been deputed to Manipur for three years.

Digital Desk: In order to manage the current security situation in the state, senior IPS officer Rajiv Singh, who is now the inspector general of the CRPF, has been moved to Manipur.

According to a formal order, Singh, an IPS officer from the Tripura cadre who graduated in 1993, has been deputed to Manipur for three years.

“The undersigned is directed to refer to the subject cited above and to convey the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for the Inter-cadre deputation of Shri Rajiv Singh, IPS (TR:93), presently working as IG, CRPF, from Tripura cadre to Manipur cadre for three years from the date of joining, in relaxation of the policy as a special case in the public interest,” the union home ministry order read.

Singh was to be immediately released from duty for him to begin his new assignment, according to the order as well.

The relocation takes place amid ethnic unrest in Manipur, which started on May 3 and has since claimed 80 lives. After a relative respite for more than a month, the state experienced a startling spike in fighting and gunfire between terrorists and security personnel on Sunday.

A 'Tribal Solidarity March' was arranged in the hill districts on May 3 to protest the Meitei community's desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which sparked the start of the first ethnic violence in Manipur.

Before the violence, there had been tensions over the eviction of Kuki villages from the reserve forest area, which had sparked several minor protests.

Sources told PTI that Singh is expected to be given a significant role in managing the current Manipur scenario.

The Manipur government has a security adviser in the form of former CRPF chief Kuldiep Singh, who was nominated by the Centre earlier this month.
