Mizo couple manhandled, attacked along Assam-Mizoram border, their vehicle completely damaged

Karimganj: A Mizo couple, who were returning from Assam, was caught in the violent crossfire at Assam-Mizoram Border yesterday. A mob of over a hundred people manhandled the couple, ransacked their belongings and completely damaged their car.

A violent situation flared up at Assam-Mizoram border yesterday wherein 6 Police Personnel of Assam Police including one civilian succumbed to injuries inflicted by gun shots from the Mizoram side. At least 67 have been reported injured and are undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College.

Barely two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting of all Northeastern State Chief Ministers in Shillong to discuss the inter-state boundary disputes in the region, a couple from Mizoram was attacked by the mob in the Assam side in Cachar district.

The Assam Police resorted to tear gas and blank fire to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, in order to stop the incursion along the border area, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to look into the matter at the earliest.

“Shri  @AmitShah ji….kindly look into the matter. This needs to be stopped right now,” CM Zoramthanga tweeted.

The issue of internal border dispute have long been unresolved and continues to hinder development work along the border regions due to a faulty and confusing historical narratives and policies then decided by the Government of India while carving out the Northeastern States.
