Digital Desk: The bodies of eight Bihar labourers who were trapped under debris after a stone quarry in Mizoram collapsed on Monday were recovered on Tuesday morning.

At least 12 workers were trapped after a stone quarry collapsed in south Mizoram's Hnahthial district, about 160 km from Aizawl, on Monday.

An NDRF team of two officers and 13 personnel arrived on the scene on Tuesday morning to conduct search and rescue operations, according to Hnahthial DC R Lalremsanga.

A search is underway to rescue other labourers who are still believed to be trapped.

The tragedy occurred around 3 pm, while ABCI Infrastructure Private Limited labourers were working in the quarry at Maudarh village. According to police, 13 individuals were working at the site when it caved in.

While one labourer was able to escape the scene, the rest were unable to do so and were trapped beneath the rubble, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Kumar.

In a video circulated on social media, workers can be seen breaking and collecting stones at the quarry as loose soil caved in from above.

Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers from nearby villages and Hnahthial town rushed to the scene to help with the rescue.
