Nagaland Assembly ‘unanimously’ resolves to demand the repeal of AFSPA from Northeast

Kohima: Amid the growing demand for the repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Act (AFSPA), a special session of the Nagaland Assembly was held today to pass a resolution to repeal AFSPA after the killing of 14 civilians in Mon district.

Following widespread protests and demands by many organizations, tribal groups and students’ bodies for repealing the AFSPA from Nagaland and Northeast, the Nagaland cabinet on December 7 decided to write to the central government to withdraw the AFSPA from the state.

The Nagaland Assembly today ‘unanimously’ resolved to demand the Centre for repeal of the AFSPA from the Northeast following the Nagaland killings.
The members of the Assembly vehemently condemned the killings that took place in Oting-Tiru village in Nagaland in Mon district on 4th December 2021 in the indiscriminate firing by the 21 Para Special Forces of the Indian Army.

The assembly members have demanded an apology from the concerned authority, along with an assurance that justice will be delivered by applying the laws of the land upon those who perpetrated the inhuman massacre and upon those who are responsible for the incident.

The assembly demanded a peaceful political settlement and bringing an end to the entire political deadlock with the Centre, concerning the Naga political issue.
The resolution also stated that the Naga people’s voices need to be heard and respected. The house hence once again insists the negotiating parties of the Indo-Naga political dialogue to bring the talks to its logical conclusion by reaching a settlement that is honourable.

It may be mentioned here that barring Assam, (AFSPA was removed from Tripura in 2015 by Manik Sarkar led left-front coalition government), all other NE states are demanding the repeal of the AFSPA that has been controlling the region with its contentious rules.
