Digital Desk: In a significant development in the Nazira physical assault case involving suspended Additional Superintendent of Police (border) Charaideo district, Subhalakshmi Dutta, it appears that the investigation may be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Assam, according to highly placed sources.
This revelation comes in the wake of Superintendent of Police, CID Assam, directing SP Sivasagar to submit a detailed report promptly for the Inspector General of Police, CID, Assam, Ulubari in Guwahati.
The case took a major turn when the Assam State Commission for Women and the Assam Human Rights Commission stepped in and took suo-motu cognizance of the reports surrounding the incident.
Harmeet Singh, the Special DGP of Assam Police, held a press conference at the Assam Police Headquarters in Ulubari, Guwahati, on Friday, providing insights into the case. Singh revealed that Subhalakshmi Dutta had allegedly attempted to kill the victim, Anima Praja, who worked as domestic help in her home.
Singh stated, "After the initial physical examination of the victim, Anima Praja, the hospital did not mention anything about grievous injuries. Therefore, only sections 324/342 of the IPC were initially added to the case. Subsequently, the victim was shifted to Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH), where the hospital reported only 13% of skin burns. It was only after the victim, also the complainant in this case, was released from the hospital and submitted her statement before the magistrate under Section 164 CrPC, that it became clear that the accused had attempted to murder her. As a result, other sections of the IPC, including 326/307/506, were added."
The incident began on August 26 when Anima Praja, the daughter of Bibesen Nayak from village No.3 Kakoi Balijan in Lakhimpur district, filed a complaint with the police. In her complaint, she alleged that she had been physically tortured while working as a maid for Subhalakshmi Dutta.
A case was subsequently registered as 36/2023 at the Nazira police station, and investigations have been ongoing ever since.
The involvement of the CID Assam in the case signifies a crucial development and underscores the gravity of the allegations against Subhalakshmi Dutta. With the Assam State Commission for Women and the Assam Human Rights Commission closely monitoring the situation, there will likely be heightened scrutiny as the investigation progresses, ensuring that justice is served for the victim, Anima Praja.
