Digital Desk: The new Assam Legislative Assembly building in Dispur, Guwahati, was inaugurated on Sunday by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
Previously, after Dispur became the capital in 1972, the Assembly was housed in a converted tea warehouse. It should be noted that Assam has seen the inauguration of its new permanent assembly building after a half-century wait.
In addition to others, the Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Rameshwar Teli are joining the inaugural ceremony.
The new Assembly complex is located across 10 acres of ground and includes the main structure, which will house the House, as well as annexe buildings for administrative and other parts, according to officials.
Reportedly, the new complex's foundation was set almost ten years ago, with an initial cost estimate of Rs 234.84 crore. The increased estimate is Rs 351 crore due to construction delays and the addition of new components to the complex, they said.
The new House can accommodate 180 MPs. The Assembly currently has 129 legislators.
