Municipality has asked individuals to pay property tax dues by January 1 to avoid power outages...
Digital Desk: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has conveyed to the public the responsibility of property assessment and linking property holding numbers to electricity consumer numbers, as the civic body is unsure how to recover Rs. 250 crores in pending property tax from over two lakh residents withholding numbers.
The approach has been used to screen out tax evaders.
The municipality has asked individuals to pay property tax dues by January 1 to avoid power outages, and the civic body has partnered with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited to accomplish this (APDCL).
According to GMC data, there are over 3 lakh power subscribers within the local body's authority, with over 2 lakh having property holding numbers.
As said by the GMC official, the remaining electrical customers do not have a property holding number, implying that they have never paid property tax.
Furthermore, just about 83,000 of the over two lakh households with property holding numbers paid taxes last year, with the remainder still owing.
Meanwhile, GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania stated that the civic body has been levying a massive loss in revenue collection for years and has therefore adopted a user-friendly platform that allows citizens to assess their property, create holding numbers if they do not already have them, and clear the dues. He stated that the self-service approach was implemented because the GMC does not have the people to inspect and recover dues in all 60 wards.
