Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, against whom an FIR has been registered for allegedly inciting violence, will be taken into custody following the Lok Sabha polls. In response to "wanton acts of violence" that occurred in Guwahati on Tuesday during the Congress party's "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra," Assam police suo motu filed a formal complaint against Rahul Gandhi and several other politicians.

'We have filed an FIR. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will conduct the investigation and he (Gandhi) will be arrested after the Lok Sabha elections, Sarma said on the sidelines of a programme at Nazira in Sibsagar district. The Lok Sabha elections are due within a few months in the country.

The case has been moved to the Assam CID for a thorough investigation through a SIT that would be formed by the Additional Director General of Police, according to Director General of Police GP Singh. Sarma had given the DGP instructions to file a case against Gandhi for inciting the crowd to smash barricades in an attempt to enter Guwahati city on Tuesday during the Yatra. This resulted in a skirmish with the police during which four police officers and several senior Congress leaders were hurt, including state party president Bhupen Bora and the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

Under IPC sections that address criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, assault, or criminal force to dissuade public workers from exercising their duties, damaging public property, and other offenses, an FIR was filed against Congress leaders.
