Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated today that the state is being used as a corridor by "Rohingya infiltrators" from Bangladesh to either go to Delhi or Kashmir, with the help of some brokers in Tripura.

During the past several years, infiltration from Bangladesh into Assam has been almost zero, but some recent activity has been noticed along the Indo-Bangla border in Karimganj district, CM Sarma said while addressing the Superintendents of Police convention at Bongaigaon.

''Rohingyas are now using Assam as a route to Delhi or Kashmir. Our investigations have indicated that some Tripura brokers facilitate this infiltration,'' CM Sarma said.

The director general of police has already taken steps to prevent this, and the Karimganj superintendent of police has been directed to increase vigilance to prevent infiltration, he said.

"The authorities of three districts in the Barak Valley should remain active, and we ought to go to Tripura, arrest the brokers, and break the backbone of this syndicate,'' CM Sarma added.

Cachar, Karimgaj, and Hailakandi are the three districts of the Barak Valley region.

Proactive measures must be taken to prevent "Rohingya infiltrators," smugglers, and insurgents from using Assam as a transit route to other states, he said.

This is a new rising crime, and infiltrators mostly use the train route, thus railway police must play an important role in this regard.

''Intelligence should be strengthened in all railway stations from Barak Valley to Assam's western border so that the Rohingyas can be intercepted and decisive action is taken against them,'' he said.

Further, CM Sarma stated that Assam police should take action both in source states and at railway and bus stops if the situation required.

The Rohingya are originally from Myanmar. Since a military crackdown began in August 2017 to evict the primarily Muslim ethnic group from their homeland in Rakhine state, many of people have fled to Bangladesh. Many of them have entered India from Bangladesh.
