However, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of the MLA under the case registered against him at Geetanagar and Panbazaar police station. MLA Sherman Ali had been arrested by the CM’s Special Vigilance Cell for alleged embezzlement of the MLA fund.

He was sentenced to 5-day custody under the Special Vigilance Cell after being produced in the court for his involvement in the fund embezzlement case. Later, the MLA had been sentenced to judicial custody after the Chief Judicial Magistrate court (CJM) was notified by the vigilance cell that Ali was not needed in their custody any longer.

The Special Vigilance cell had arrested six people on June 29, of which three were government officials, on charges of misappropriation of funds, over Rs 25 lakh, meant for construction of roads under Mandia development block in Barpeta district.

A total of Rs 65 lakh had been released for road construction under 14 MLA local area development schemes in 2017-18. Out of the aforesaid amount, the accused had allegedly siphoned off Rs 25,08,323 without executing the work.
