Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep concern on Friday regarding reports that a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was demolished at Gandhi Chowk in Tinsukia to make way for a clock tower. Sarma stated he was unaware of the district administration's decision and vowed to verify the facts, emphasizing Assam's debt to Gandhi, particularly for his support of Gopinath Bordoloi during the historical Grouping Plan controversy.

Sarma said, "I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts. Assam owes so much to Mahatma Gandhi. He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan."

The removal of the 5.5 ft statue has sparked significant protests in Doomdooma, with locals gathering to condemn the act. Demonstrators voiced their outrage over the statue's destruction, reflecting deep respect for the leader.

Author Tushar Gandhi criticized the decision on social media, accusing the BJP government of a colonial mentality by prioritizing a clock tower over a symbol of national integrity. Protesters are demanding a comprehensive investigation and the immediate restoration of the statue.

In response to the uproar, Doomdooma BJP MLA assured that a new, taller statue—6.5 feet—would be erected at the original site within six months, alongside the planned clock tower, aiming to address the community's concerns while proceeding with the development project.
