Digital Desk: Asom Divas is a regional public holiday commemorated in the Indian state of Assam on December 2. This holy day, also known as Sukapha Divas, commemorates the advent of the Ahom empire's first king in Assam. Assamese people commemorate the legendary king Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha on this day.
Sukapha is remembered by his people as a powerful, fearless, and bold leader who played a crucial role in uniting Assam's numerous indigenous ethnic groups. Sukapha is thought to have arrived in Namrup, Assam, on this day in 1228. As a result, the date of his arrival, December 2, is considered the founding date of the Ahom Kingdom.
His accomplishments for gaining the support and hearts of the state's aboriginal community are regularly recalled and praised. Sukaphaa is recognised to as the architect of Bor Asom in this case (greater Assam). On this day, festivities and traditional exhibitions are held.
During this event, tribal art is also encouraged and performed by societal groups, villages, and educational institutions.
Indigenous dances and music, such as Bagurumba, Bihu dance, and Bhortal dance, are performed by local talents in honour of their 13th century king. People in the modern age are also seen on social media wishing each other a Happy Asom day.
