Digital Desk: Days before a Dibrugarh University M.Com. first-semester student had to jump from his hostel building to "save his life' from ragging, authorities at Assam Medical College (AMC), another prestigious institution in the district, had expelled two postgraduate students from their hostel and barred them from attending classes after they were found guilty of ragging junior students.
"Two postgraduate students of the department of orthopedics, Sayan Mukherjee (2021-22) and Saket Saraf (2021-22) were found guilty of harassing junior postgraduate students, both physically and mentally, which is gross misconduct," stated an order from the office of the principal, AMC.
Therefore, the accused PG students have been subjected to disciplinary action based on the recommendations of the AMC's anti-ragging committee.
The two students were suspended from attending classes and academic privileges for six months, besides being suspended/expelled from the hostel with immediate effect, the order stated.
Further, the AMC principal and chief superintendent, Sanjeeb Kakati, stated that the college authorities wanted to send a strong message against ragging.
"We acted immediately when the victim's elder brother (a junior PG student) informed the college officials via e-mail about the harassment meted out to his brother by seniors from the orthopaedic department," Kakati added.
Following a meeting of the anti-ragging committee, the AMC principal stated, "Both the guilty PG students have been expelled/suspended from the hostel and restricted from attending classes/academic privileges for six months."
The elder brother, who resides outside the region, thanked the college administration for responding quickly to establish a secure and conducive environment for AMC students.
