Violence erupts during second day of Lumding eviction

Hojai: On the second day of the eviction drive at Lumding reserve forest, a heated situation occurred between the evicted people and Rahmat Ali, a nature lover, on Tuesday.

As per reports, the violence erupted after Rahmat Ali along with one Jonaik Mohan visited the eviction site to assure the people that he will fight for them.

The people alleged that Rahmat Ali collected a huge amount of money from the people assuring to provide them land pattas. However, when no initiative was taken by Rahmat Ali, the people expressed anger over him after he visited the evicted site.

The angry crowd unleashed their fury by assaulting Rahmat Ali and Jonaik Mohan physically and also destroyed his car.

Later, the police reached the site and rescued both of them from the angry mob.

Moreover, villagers claimed that Rahmat Ali came to the site to demand more money.

Notably, the eviction drive in Lumding reserve forest has been conducted in compliance with the Gauhati High Court’s order barely two months after the Gorukhuti violence in Sipajhar.

A day before Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that about 1000 persons voluntarily vacated the area before the eviction drive was started on Monday.

Reportedly, around 1000 police and CRPF personnel were deployed by the state government to carry out the drive-in Lumding Reserve forest. The government will reportedly clear about 500 hectares of the 1410 encroached land of the reserve forest during the two-day drive which started on Monday.
