Widespread CAA protest ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Kaziranga

Digital desk: The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam is being opposed by a the sixteen opposition parties as excitement grows for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Kaziranga. Speaking to the media, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi stressed the importance of the PM's visit and urged him to take into account the worries that Assamese people have about the CAA. "Prime Minister Modi, while coming to Assam should give us words and assurance that the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA will not be implemented in Assam," Gogoi said.

Gogoi declared, "We will never ever allow foreigners to be in Assam without Assamese culture, language, and tradition," highlighting the possible harm the CAA poses to Assamese identity and culture. He urged PM Modi to give in to the demands of the sixteen opposition parties and hold off on implementing the contentious laws in Assam. 

 

As the countdown to PM Modi's Kaziranga visit grew, Gogoi emphasized how unambiguous their demand was: "Do not implement CAA in Assam." If the BJP government moves forward with its plans, he threatened to provoke widespread opposition, saying, "If it is done or about to get implemented, the entire Assam will be compelled to protest against the BJP government."

Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh of Assam was accused by Gogoi of authoritarian methods of suppressing dissent and encouraging violence by the BJP government. Gogoi claimed that "there is no democracy in Assam; there is a dictatorship," and he urged the authorities to desist from using coercive measures.
