Digital Desk: Horrific act in the name of Humanity, in a drastic turn of an incident a woman identified as Sangita Kati, a 30-year-old lady from Assam's Sonitpur district, tragically died after being accused of witchcraft.
The heinous crime occurred on the night of December 25, 2023, in Bahbari village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Tezpur police station.
Reportedly, Sangita was attacked by her neighbour, Suraj Baghwar, who, apparently drunk, brought in others from outside their community to carry out the horrible act.
Explaining the incident deets, it's said that the mob tied up Sangita's husband before attacking her with sharp weapons and eventually setting her ablaze. Sangita died from her injuries after being taken to a nearby government hospital.
Residents alerted the police, who arrived on the scene quickly. Superintendent of Police Susanta Biswa Sarma revealed that six people, aged 30 to 35, were detained in connection with the murder: Ajay Sanghar, Dhiraj Bhaguwar, Suraj Bhaguwar, Pinku Malhar, Baila Sanghar, and Babul Nagdhar.
Further mentioning, the authorities are undertaking a comprehensive investigation to discover whether the death was motivated by witchcraft fears.
The accusers have been charged with murder, forcibly confining, and torturing a lady, with additional charges possible as the investigation progresses. They are anticipated to appear in court shortly.
Meanwhile, Sangita's body has been taken to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and a report is pending.
This grief tragedy has brought to light the ongoing problem of witch-hunting in Assam, a decades-old phenomenon that continues to claim lives and spread terror among communities.
