Barpeta : Congress leader Abdul Khaleque’s mother, Sabura Khatoon (75) has been served a national Register of Citizens objection notice. One Hridoy Ranjan nath, the notice said, had objected to Khatoon’s inclusion in the draft register, which aims to be a roster of bonafide Indian Citizens in Assam.
Abdul Khaleque’s mother called for NRC hearing
However, when Khatoon accompanied by Khaleque appeared at the NRC hearing centre at Barpeta Road on May 27th, 2019 the objector was “nowhere to seen around”.
“I would have questioned the objector regarding the alleged anomalies in the documents submitted by my mother, but he is absent. My mother’s name is enlisted in the 1951 NRC roll and also in the 1970 voters list. My mother was born in Kalgachia Bortan village. It is surprising that someone has filed an objection questioning my mother’s citizenship,” Khaleque told the media.
He added, “Genuine citizens are being harassed in the name of NRC. The objector should have been present at the centre today if the allegations against my mother were true. The ones who are filing fake objections are the enemies of the nation. We want an error free NRC.”
The Congress also lashed out at the government over the death of seventy year old Amit Das, who died in a detention centre in a prison in Goalpara, Assam on April 6th, 2019.
