Guwahati : In an unexpected political development in Assam, AGP has once again joined BJP and have decided to fight the Lok Sabha elections 2019 as an alliance.
The Three Asom Gana parishad (AGP) ministers who had resigned from their posts in order to protest the NDA-led Centre’s decision to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 passed in the Parliament, will withdraw their resignation on March 13th, 2019.
AGP president and Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Assam Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, Assam Food and Civil Supplied Minister Choudhury tendered their resignations on January 9th, 2019.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Assam in alliance with AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), BJP general secretary Ram Madhav announced on March 12th, 2019.
Congress has been trying hard with its poll campaigning after the BJP-AGP fallout on the Citizenship Bill issue. Congress president Rahul Gandhi assured delegations from Assam that if voted to power, it would scrap the controversial bill. The BJP had stated that if it returns to power, it will bring the Bill again in the parliament.
