Tripura CM Manik Saha recently informed the state parliament that the state is in negotiations with the Centre to establish an NCB section.
Digital Desk: Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh are all set to obtain Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal units to bolster the war on drugs in states with porous international borders with countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh, in what appears to be a big milestone for the northeastern area.
The official declaration of these zones was made on Saturday during Union Minister Amit Shah's meeting with North East Chief Ministers and DGPs in Guwahati, according to a Tripura Police Department official.
"Several topics concerning illicit drug trafficking and the growing of illegal crops such as opium and ganja were discussed during the conference." The Union Home Minister briefed the Chief Ministers and top cops of the northeastern states that NCB zones will be established in three states in the first phase, where drug charges are more prevalent. The NCB unit in Guwahati would be converted into the regional headquarters," the official stated.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha indicated earlier in the state parliament that the state is in discussions with the Centre to establish an NCB unit, citing the spike in drug trafficking and abuse among children and teenagers.
The official stated, "In addition to the operation side, efforts will also be done to free people from the drug mafia's control. Many farmers are cultivating illegal plants like ganja and opium to extract drugs. An interministerial group would be established, according to the Union Home Minister, to examine the pattern of cultivation and offer suggestions for replacement crops for ganja and opium. This will be very advantageous for Tripura because there are many ganja growers there because of the high labour costs and enormous harvest profits.
The insider went on to say that the allegations of an increase in drug usage cases in Tripura had the Home Minister deeply concerned. The Union Minister promised that all possible measures would be taken to ensure that the Northeast would be free of drug menace.
The official continued, "Special emphasis has also been placed on upgrading current forensic science facilities with the greatest equipment feasible to make them suitable to handle drug-related forensic investigations.
