Another employee of the defunct Cachar Paper Mill, owned by the Assam Government, passed away at his residence in Dholai of Cachar district on January 31, 2025.
Digital Desk: The hardships of the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) Paper Mills employees keep coming since the two paper mills of Assam stopped functioning. The employees are struggling to meet their basic living expenses as they have been facing financial distress for the past 95 months.
Another employee of the defunct Cachar Paper Mill, owned by the Assam Government, passed away at his residence in Dholai of Cachar district on January 31, 2025. The deceased, identified as Phani Bhushan Barman was battling with illness, and could not survive due to lack of medical treatment. He passed away at the age of 58 in Dholai. Barman was survived by his wife and four children. His children are still unemployed.
According to reports, the death toll of the employees of defunct paper mills in Assam reached 131 as the mills stopped functioning. Cachar Paper Mill of Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill of Morigaon district have been defunct since 2015 and 2017 respectively.
The mills' unions alleged that the employees have been losing their lives because of poverty, extreme anxiety, and lack of medical care. In a press release on Wednesday, Manabendra Chakraborty, the president of the joint action committee of recognized unions of the two defunct mills accused the state govt for the deaths of the workers.
He further added that the mills' employees have not yet received their salaries and provident funds for the past 95 months, which resulted in their suffering from poverty and mental trauma. Workers who were diagnosed with various ailments could not afford their medical expenses and died.
