    Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma unveils a trio of Durand Cup trophies in Guwahati

    CM Sarma says the government is working on plans to restore the Bordoloi Trophy's lost glory.


    Digital Desk: Chief Minister Himanata Biswa Sarma, on Thursday, unveiled the three Durand Cup trophies, namely the Durand Cup, the Shimla Trophy, and the President's Cup, in Guwahati.


    The 134-year-old Durand Cup football tournament will be held in Assam for the first time, from August 17 to September 4, 2022, as part of a Trophy Tour involving five cities.


    Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the tournament matches in Assam as a historic event for the state's people. While praising the armed forces for their support of the tournament, the Chief Minister stated that the 131st edition of the Durand Cup would be unique, with 20 teams, including 11 from the Indian Super League, to compete.





    Dr Sarma stated that football is more than just a game for the people of Assam and that the government has been nurturing talent so that the country can become a sporting superpower in the future. 


    He also stated that all efforts are being made to resurrect the glory days of tournaments such as the Bordoloi Trophy in the state.


    Dr Sarma elaborated on the actions of the Assam government to promote a sporting culture in the state, including the construction of new stadiums, coaching camps, employment opportunities for athletes, sports pensions, etc.


    The chairman of the organising committee for the Durand event also attended today's event. General K.K. Repsawal, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (101 Area), Lieutenant General KC Panchanathan, and many other senior militaries and Assamese government officials were present.
