Digital Desk: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Centre's decision to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) for alleged terrorist activities on Wednesday, stating that the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "bold and decisive."

The PFI and several of its affiliated organizations were banned by the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday night.

"The government is firm in its resolve to ensure that anyone with a diabolical, divisive, or disruptive design against India shall be dealt with iron fist," the chief minister wrote on Twitter.

"India of Modi Era is decisive and bold," he added.

Sarma had previously stated that his government has repeatedly requested that the organization be declared illegal for allegedly developing an environment for terrorist activities.

The action of the central government came days after a countrywide crackdown on the 16-year-old PFI, which resulted in the arrest of over a hundred of its activities and the seizure of several dozen properties.

The Assam Police have so far detained 36 PFI activists from various regions of the state and New Delhi.

Following a crackdown by several agencies led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the police detained 25 organization members from eight districts in Assam on Tuesday, while 11 more were detained on September 22 and 23.

On Tuesday, more than 170 PFI associates were detained across seven states, while 106 PFI leaders and members were detained in earlier operations five days ago.
