Assam government to build animal transit & rescue camps in Kaziranga: Assam CM

Digital Desk: The Assam government is thinking of setting up transit and rescue centres in Kaziranga to help animals during the flood season, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

It was discussed at a meeting between the CM and officials from the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC) that aimed at increasing the capability and capacity of veterinary care facilities.

"During the flood season, we also plan to set up transit and rescue camps in Kaziranga to assist stray animals.  Three officials would be dispatched to Jamnagar, Gujarat, to examine the GZRRC's facilities and replicate them in Assam," Sarma said.

In light of the growing number of human-wildlife conflicts, the state government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GZRRC.

Meanwhile, the Assam government was waiting for approval from the Centre to build an elevated road over nine corridors preferred by the animals of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve during the time of the flood.

The elevated route will stretch for 35 kilometres beside an existing arterial highway. CM Sarma briefed the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, about the project during his recent visit to the state.
