Digital Desk:  In the continuing gunfight between security forces and suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in the Tinsukia district, one member of the banned outfit was killed on Friday; however, the search for five members is still ongoing.

The deceased has been identified as Gyan Asom.

Notably, the development occurred after Assam police informed Oil India Limited about recent intelligence information regarding the ULFA-I's alleged intent to target their installations and kidnap officials.

An Indian army senior official who confirmed the incident claimed that they received specific information about a group of six ULFA-I members headed by Rupom Asom taking refuge at Dapather Majgaon under the Kakopathar police station. The area was then visited by two troops dressed in civilian attire to verify the information.

"When our men gave the signal, a joint team of the 14 Assam Regiment and police was deployed instantly," the source claimed.

According to sources, the security crew was attacked by the suspects with two grenades as well as heavy gunfire as soon as they arrived at the house.

"As they attempted to retreat from the home's backyard toward the path, two cadres were hit by bullets in retaliatory fire," he said.

Later, one cadre's body was found, but the search for the other alleged militants is still ongoing.

"The operation area has been expanded to encircle a nearly 5-kilometre radius. As a result, nearly six villages have been blocked off, including Pani Gaon, Ahom Gaon, and Henglijan Gaon," the source said.

Meanwhile, a second source claimed that the group entered the home on Friday morning and took refuge under the threat of guns.  "A backpack containing an IED has been seized from the residence where they were hiding," the source added.
