    Assam Panchayat Polls: First Phase Records 70% Voter Turnout Amid Violence In Several Districts
    As per report, three incidents of poll-related violence erupted in Assam during the Panchayat polls, leading to the injury of several people. At least two individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence-related activities, police said.

    Digital Desk: The first phase of the Panchayat Polls in Assam concluded at 4:30 PM on Friday, May 2, with an overall voter turnout of 70.19%. The data was released by the Assam State Election Commission.

    As per report, three incidents of poll-related violence erupted in Assam during the Panchayat polls, leading to the injury of several people. At least two individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence-related activities, police said.

    A polling station at a centre in Sribhumi was cancelled after two groups attacked each other. They vandalised election-related properties, forcibly took away a ballot box, and were thrown into a pond.

    In a clash between two parties in Cachar district, five people were injured after they engaged in physical violence at the premises of the polling station just before the voting. The injured were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

    Following disruptions in multiple polling stations, the Assam State Election Commission has announced a re-poll in 43 polling stations.

    The voting procedure began at 7:30 AM in 14 districts of Upper Assam and Barak Valley. The polling in the first phase took place in Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.

    In the first phase, the polling process was held for 216 zilla parishads, 91 anchalik panchayats, and 1,139 gaon panchayats.

    A total of 12,916 polling stations were established across various places for the first phase of elections. 89.54 lakh people from Assam were eligible for the first phase of elections.

    Despite various security measures to ensure a swift voting process across the selected regions, several incidents of violence were reported in the state, including in Cachar, Sribhumi, and Sonitpur.

    The second phase of the elections will be held on May 7 in the districts of Dhubri, South Salmara, Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.

    Over 1.80 crore voters will cast their votes in the ongoing Panchayat elections 2025, scheduled to take place in two phases.

    The counting of votes for the elections will take place on May 11.
