Guwahati: On Tuesday, the Assam Police announced that they will be releasing more than 50 foreigners that have been staying in the state detention centres for more than 3 years.
Mukul Saikia, the superintendent of police, Border Organisation of Assam police said that these foreigners belong to 11 districts. He further added that the district SPs have been instructed to complete the formalities.
In May, the Supreme Court ordered that the illegal foreigners in Assam who have completed more than 3 years need to provide biometric details in the database before the release.
A Border Organisation official also said that addresses of the ones who provided sureties of their release were also verified over and above the addresses of the detainees. The pending applications will also be expedited soon.
Meanwhile, a deadlock still remains between the State and the Centre regarding the lakhs of people left out of the final NRC list as to what steps will be taken for the repatriation of the ones found foreigners as per the foreigners’ tribunal.
