    Assam reported highest number of sedition cases in 2021, Haryana second

    Digital Desk: In the last eight years, Assam has reported the highest number of sedition charges in the country.  Out of the total 475 sedition cases registered since 2014, 69 cases, or 14.52 percent, were reported from Assam. Reportedly, one in every six cases reported were from Assam.


    The information was taken from the National Crime Records Bureau's report, "Crime in India 2021." (NCRB). Sedition charges in India are registered under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).


    Assam was followed by Haryana with 42 cases reported in the last eight years. Haryana was followed by Jharkhand and Karnataka, with 40 and 38 cases, respectively.


    In terms of reported sedition cases, the top six states accounted for over half of all reported cases. Jammu & Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively.


    Additionally, according to the study, double-digit sedition incidents were reported in nine other states and UTs. In 2014, Delhi had the greatest number of such cases among the UTs, with 13.


     According to the report, data on sedition cases is included under the headline 'Offenses Against State.'


    While cases registered under Section 124A of the IPC have been mentioned under the sub-head ‘Sedition’, the cases registered under Sections 121, 121A, 122, and 123 IPC have been given under the second sub-head ‘Others’.  Out of 149 offenses against the state that were registered in 2021, 76 were under the "other" subhead and 73 were sedition charges.


    Additionally, a number of states and UTs failed to report even one case of sedition. Meghalaya, Mizoram, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and Puducherry were among them.
