The flood has affected 487 villages and almost 5.50 lakh people in the Barpeta district.
Digital Desk: The flood situation in Assam has worsened after the flood waters of many rivers have submerged new areas, affecting more than 31.54 lakh people in at least 26 districts.
The flood has affected 487 villages and almost 5.50 lakh people in the Barpeta district.
Moreover, a total of 26684.50 hectares of the district's cropland area is currently under water due to flooding.
The devastating flood has caused major losses for many local farmers.
As per a local resident of the Kaljahi area in the Barpeta district named Jahidul Islam, it is a huge flood and he has not seen anything like this earlier in his life.
"The flood waters have completely submerged every home in our neighbourhood. Every area was flooded, and there was nowhere for the residents to take shelter. Many people are taking refuge on highways by constructing temporary shelters. We have massive problems, "stated Islam.
Another local, Ilim Khan, stated that they had lost everything in the flood.
"We are currently concerned about our future and our access to food. Our crops had perished from the water. Several villagers work as day labourers. The flood causes more problems for the people" Khan said.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) informed the officials on Tuesday that over the past 6 days, it had airlifted a total of 517 tonnes of relief supplies.
As per the data of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in 26 of the state's districts, there are still flood waters covering 2675 villages and 91349 hectares of crops.
Assam's overall flood situation has improved, but the state's natural disaster continues to affect more than 33.03 lakh people in 28 districts, ASDMA reported on Saturday.
ASDMA further reported that a total of 117 people have lost their lives so far in the flood and landslides in the state this year; of which 100 people died in flood alone, while the remaining 17 died due to landslides.
