Assam Transport Department warns ride-hailing platforms; to take stern actions

Notably, the recent alleged assault on a Delhi-based journalist, Nikita Jain, by an Uber driver in Guwahati on May 29 has sounded alarm bells for all.

Digital Desk: The Assam transport department has issued a stern warning to cab unions and ride-hailing platforms like Ola, Uber, Rapido, and PayIndia in light of recent cases of cab drivers behaving badly towards customers or passengers.

Addressing the media, transport officer Himangshu Kumar Das stated that not all drivers are profit-driven and that some drivers are concerned about the requirements of their customers.

"The entire cab service is criticised due to a few drivers who are misbehaving with passengers either by asking for more money, cancelling trips, or denying payment methods. From now onwards, any inappropriate behaviour against customers will not be accepted. The cab drivers will not be allowed to ask for additional money from the customer who books a ride."

From now onwards, any inappropriate behaviour against customers will not be accepted.  The cab drivers will not be allowed to ask for additional money from the customer who books a ride," said Himangshu Kumar Das.

"Negligence on the part of authorities of cab organisations leads to such occurrences where consumers are put at risk. Cab drivers must now adhere to tight guidelines. Any cab driver who breaks the guidelines will have their licence revoked," he added.

"The licence termination will happen in stages. During the first five days of phase one, the driver will not be permitted to make any journeys. In part two, he won't be permitted to drive for the following ten days, and in phase three, his licence will be completely revoked," Das explained.

It should be noted that many people are scared of cab drivers. Customers have complained about cab drivers refusing to take journeys if they didn't pay extra money.
