Digital Desk: The Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam Police, GP Sing, reported that during the Monthly State Crime Review for Assam held in February 2024, the conviction rate in the state has increased steadily to 21.65%. This indicates an improvement in the percentage of cases resulting in convictions compared to previous periods.
At the monthly state crime review held on March 22nd, 2024, at Assam Police Headquarters, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam Police, GP Sing, announced a significant uptick in the state's conviction rate. The meeting, conducted in a hybrid mode, saw the active participation of key law enforcement officials, including CID Range Officers, district Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Crime.
The highlight of the session was the revelation regarding the conviction rate, which has shown a steady rise, reaching 21.65% for February 2024. This surge marks a significant improvement compared to previous periods.
In 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his government’s stand in the crackdown against crime. He said Assam’s conviction rate would surpass 20% by the end of 2023 and up to 50% by 2026. “We are improving all the relevant activities, and by 2026, the conviction rate against criminal activities will reach up to 50%, which will be closer to the national ratio,” Sarma added.
What does the conviction rate data shared by DGP say?
The conviction rate in Assam for the years 2018 to 2022 shows fluctuations, with a noticeable increase in 2022.
In 2018, the conviction rate was 5.9%, slightly below the national average of 6.93%.
In 2019, Assam saw a slight increase in the conviction rate to 6.9%, still below the national average of 6.65%.
2020 witnessed a decrease in the conviction rate to 5.5%, while the national average rose to 7.34%.
The year 2021 saw a modest increase in Assam's conviction rate to 6.1%, while the national average slightly decreased to 5.6%.
In 2022, there was a significant rise in Assam's conviction rate to 13.5%, surpassing the national average of 13.11%.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), the conviction rate is the ratio of punishment imposed on the accused in cases involving criminal actions covered by the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL), among other things.
According to the NCRB, it is the responsibility of state governments and Union Territory Administrations to increase the efficiency and capability of the police force, as well as its effectiveness, transparency, and accountability.
