    Awards conferred on the occasion of USTM Media Conclave-2022
    USTM  honoured the media personalities from the region, recognising their contribution in the field of News Media giving legitimacy to people’s voices.

    Digital Desk: The University of Science & Technology Meghalaya on Saturday, honoured media personalities from the area for their contributions to news media, which have helped to legitimise the voice of the public and strengthen the position of the media as the "Fourth Estate".

    The USTM Media Conclave-2022, which took place at the Central Auditorium of USTM, was the occasion for the presentation of the Media Awards.

    Numerous media representatives and dignitaries attended the event, including Kaushik Deka, Executive Editor of India Today, Prasanta Rajguru, Editor-in-Chief of Prag News, PJ Baruah, Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune, Maini Mahanta, Editor of Nandini, as well as Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM, and Prof. GD Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, among others.

    Anuradha Sarma Puzari, a well-known novelist and Editor of Sadin, and Shri Pranay Bordoloi, Editor-in-Chief of Da News Plus, received this year's USTM Media Excellence Award.

    Furthermore, the USTM Media Achiever Award for 2022 went to Manash Pratim Dutta, Staff Reporter, The Assam Tribune; Bhabok M. Laloo, Assistant Editor, U Peitngor, Shillong; Manash Pratim Deka, Assistant News Editor and Anchor at ND24; Ribha Merry Suchiang, Journalist, Batesi TV, Shillong; and Tora Agarwala, Assistant Editor & NE Correspondent, Indian Express, Guwahati.

    Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM, said in the keynote address that it has been a difficult path for USTM, which started with only six students in 2011 and now takes satisfaction in receiving an A Grade from NAAC in 2021 and having more than 5,000 students.

    In addition to the university's ongoing ambition to become a world-class university by 2030, he added that it has embraced a holistic approach to social development.

    Enlightened on "Is Media Still the Fourth Pillar of Democracy?" at the USTM Media Conclave 2022? Prasanta Rajguru, Editor-in-Chief of Prag News, said that in order to get elected to the highest level of government, one must mobilise public opinion.

    He said, "Media had a beautiful past, a difficult present, and a very uncertain future."

    According to Kaushik Deka, Executive Editor of India Today, "Journalism is a profession today; the media's job is to report real news in an objective and truthful way."

    He added, "The day when people start paying for news consumption will be the day when the media can genuinely be called to be the fourth pillar of democracy."
