In a big development, the absconding husband-wife, Debasish Khargharia and Geetashree Duara Khargharia were arrested from Guwahati on Thursday night by Sivasagar Police. The arrest has taken place at a time when rumours were doing the rounds that the husband-wife have gone outside the state.
The husband and wife were arrested from Lachit Nagar in Guwahati after police got info about them hiding in the area. Earlier their vehicle was also seized in Guwahati. They have taken to Sivasagar immediately after the arrest and will be produced before the court on Thursday.
Sivasagar Police had faced severe criticism earlier for failing to arrest the husband-wife duo even after more than two weeks.
It has come to light now that Debasish and his wife were hiding in different parts of the state for the last 18 days. They had come to Guwahati recently to apply for an advance bail petition in connection with the case registered against them.
Sivasagar Police had issued phone numbers asking the citizens to inform the police if the absconding so and daughter-in-law of deceased Rajani Khargharia and Rubi Khargharia are spotted anywhere.
Post the recovery of the bodies of the Khargharia couple on July 1, police had been trying to apprehend Debasish and Geetashree for the last 18 days.
Earlier, the youngest of the three daughters of the deceased Rajani Khargharia and Rubi Khargharia had filed an FIR against her brother and sister-in-law alleging that her brother and his wife forced their parents to commit suicide.
The Khargharia couple was going through a severe financial crisis and their only son Debasish was not taking care of his ailing parents, as stated in the suicide note left behind by Rajani. They were also not being able to buy medicines and pay house rents. Rajani stated in the suicide note that their only son had repeatedly cheated them and daughter-in-law Geetashree insulted him when he had approached them for monetary assistance for his ailing wife.
As per reports, the absconding son and daughter-in-law of the deceased Khargharia couple celebrated their eight-year old son’s birthday in Demow’s Lachit Nagar on the night of July 1 – the day bodies of Rajani and Rubi Khargharia were recovered by the police.
