In a further twist on the ongoing TMC protests against the NRC updation process in Assam, 8 TMC leaders (6 MPs and 2 MLAs) arrived at the Silchar Airport on Thursday but were detained by the Police citing the Sec 144 imposed in Silchar in apprehension of the TMC visit and the resulting disruption of law and order in the region.
The TMC MPs and MLAs arrived via a Jet Airways flight at 1:50 pm in Silchar Airport but were then detained by the Assam Police and prevented from getting out of the airport. The TMC leaders were supposed to attend various rallies and meetings against the NRC updation process in Assam.
Meanwhile, senior TMC leader, Derek O’Brien, speaking to the media persons on the issue stated that a ‘super emergency’ has been imposed in India and the administration is being used by the BJP Govt to fulfill its own needs.
He also alleged that multiple female TMC leaders, who are part of the group visiting Silchar, were accosted and manhandled by the Police as they were prevented from getting out of the airport. One senior TMC leader also part of the same group was also severely injured in the scuffle, he further alleged.
According to sources, food and other facilities have been arranged for visiting TMC leaders inside the Airport itself following which they will be asked to go back to Kolkata by the authorities. The TMC leaders, however, have refused to budge unless they are allowed to visit Silchar and they have even agreed to go in groups of 2 persons so that the Sec 144 that has been imposed in the district doesn’t get violated, sources added.
