Guwahati : After much speculations and guessing games, BJP MLA Aminul Haque Laskar has been elected unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The post of the deputy speaker was lying vacant since June 2nd, 2019 after Kripanath Malla won the Karimganj seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Laskar represents the Sonai constituency in Cachar district. He won the 2016 Assembly elections on BJP ticket.
For the election of the Deputy Speaker nominations were being received till 3 pm on July 22, 2019.
Aminul is the only lone Muslim MLA from the state from the Bharatiya Janata Party who has been unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Party members congratulated Aminul on being elected unanimously as the new deputy speaker of Assam State Assembly. Wishes poured in from his constituency members as well as supporters after a lone Muslim MLA from BJP party was elected to the post creating history.
