Around dozens of celebrities, politicians, representatives of 134 organizations along with the common people are staging a protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill at Khanapara, Guwahati.
The group of people gathered here in Khanapara, Guwahati on Monday morning to submit their memorandums against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The JPC has further notified that those who are willing to sign up or want to make themselves heard before the committee can do so on Monday along with the people participating in the protest. There is no fixed number of organizations/individuals for their representation. The Joint Committee will hear from the representatives in the afternoon on May 8 and in the morning on May 9, 2018 at Silchar.
Akhil Gogoi who is leading his KMSS group has already submitted 2000 memorandums against the controversial bill.
Atul Bora, minister and president of AGP said, “The Bill is against the constitution of India and if it is passed Assam will suffer. We, the indigenous people will become minority due to the large scale immigration from Bangladesh. This bill is not only against the constituency but also against the Assam Accord.”
Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta termed the bill as anti-Assam and said that the bill once passed will put the existence of the indigenous people of Assam at a risk.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which has been for so long clouded under controversy is now gaining momentum for being anti-Assam and majority of the populace are in fact going against the passing of the bill.
