Guwahati : The unemployment crisis and the issue of contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 are two major planks the Congress is banking on the Lok Sabha Polls, said Luinzinho Faleiro, AICC general secretary, in-charge Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

Addressing a presser here o February 27th, 2019, Faleiro said, “The Northeast suffered a lot due to the Citizenship Bill. The civil and student bodies approached Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the Bill. Congress is the only option for the people of the Northeast.”
He further added that the ruling BJP government has already harmed the culture, tradition and language of the people of the Northeast and by introducing the Citizenship Bill, BJP is furthering their aim of more harm in the Northeast.

Faleiro further said that Rahul stood firm and defeated the anti-constitutional Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. It may be mentioned that in a major setback for the ruling BJP, the Bill was not tabled in the Upper House of the Parliament on February 13th, 2019 following which the Bill lapsed.

The BJP government at the Centre has been pitching for the early passage of the legislation. Facing stiff opposition from its own allies in the northeast, the Modi government has opted against an ordinance on the Citizenship Bill on February 19th, 2019.
“Unemployment is going to be one of our poll agendas. Only through manipulation, the BJP can win 21 seats out of 25 in the Northeast,” he said.
