A few days ago, the Handique Girls’ College students’ body has banned the entry of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders inside their college campus until the Bill is scrapped. The Gauhati University Post-Graduate Students’ Union has also banned the entry of the saffron party leaders in the varsity campus.
Passed by the lower House of the parliament, the bill is still yet to get its nod in the Rajya Sabha. The discussion on the contentious bill will take in Rajya Sabha on January 31. The opposition parties, students’ bodies and the civil society in the state are protesting against the Bill, claiming it will change the region’s demography and violate the historic 1985 Assam Accord.
