Digital Desk: A seminar on ‘SAY NO TO TOBACCO’ was just organized in Siddheshwar Higher Secondary School, Katigorah, recently under the programme of the National Service Scheme Katigorah unit of Assam. The event was presided over by an eminent oncologist and Padma Shri Awardee, Dr. Ravi Kannan, and he also gave a talk about cancer and how it can be prevented or treated.
NSS organized an awareness campaign about tobacco effects in cooperation with its principal, Mujibur Rahman, and NSS Program Officer Nizam Uddin. Dr. Kannan also took some time to look at some of the statistics that touched on the issue of cancer within the region. He said that NCRP data show that Assam accounts for 25,000 to 30,000 cancer incidences a year, and the whole of the northeast has 40,000 to 45,000 cases annually. Thus, including both new and old cases, this number is touching heights of multiplication.
Of every one hundred thousand people in the Northeast, one hundred and twenty are diagnosed with the disease, a statistic that is considerably higher than the national average. Dr. To this, Kannan attributed the aforementioned differential in lifestyle practices like tobacco use, alcohol intake, and lack of exercise.
He immediately called for action against the increasing menace that is cancer and suggested the initiation of a pilot project to make Katigorah a tobacco-free city. He then said that fighting cancer is only possible through a combination of awareness, rules and regulations, and community cooperation as brought out by Dr. Kannan.
To end, the seminar encouraged the community to join the battle against tobacco use so as to embrace healthy lifestyles to eradicate the disease. In view of the current unpleasant tobacco epidemic realities, the NSS team committed to taking concerted efforts to increase sensitization and practical measures for tobacco control in Katigorah.
