Guwahati: Assam government has declared dry day on October 8 Tuesday on the occasion of 571st birth anniversary of Vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Srimanta Sankardeva. In a tweet, the vice-chairperson of Assam State Anti-Drug & Prohibition Council Lucky Gogoi said, “In view of observation of Janmotsava of Sri Sri Sankardeva on 8th Oct, 2019, Govt of Assam declared this day as #DryDay throughout the state of Assam.”
Liquor shops across the state hence will remain closed on Tuesday, which also happens to be Vijaya Dashami.
The government has ordered the district administration across the state that on Tuesday there should not be any sale, consumption or possession of any intoxicant, liquor as such on dry day. “Violation of this order shall be dealt with seriously under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act, 2000,” the order added.
