Guwahati : A conglomeration of Bengali students’ organizations in Assam has alleged that the Hindu Bengalis staying in Assam are being harassed in the name of NRC. The allegation was made amidst the growing demand for action against “fake objections” against people who have already made it to NRC list.
“We have always assented to the base year of NRC updation being 1971 but genuine citizens are being “harassed in the name of ‘D-voter’ which is not at all acceptable,” said Adhir Arya, president, All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation, Baksa district committee.
Arya further added “The detention centres are unconstitutional and illogical. Why the people who have been declared as foreigners are not sent to native homes? The Hindu Bengalis who are living in Assam since many decades are being targeted and tortured.”
Baksa district Bengali Youth Student Federation former president Nilu Chakraborty alleged that a “few local groups” are “conspiring” against the Hindu Bengalis living in Assam.
The President of Coordination Committee of Bengali Organizations has also alleged that people are being called to two different NRC centres on the same day for NRC hearing. This is utmost level of harassment as the people summoned for hearing cannot be present at two different places at the same time. People are losing their patience and so many are being forced to take drastic steps losing out hope on the government.
