Guwahati: Amid nationwide protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act by the Government, the artiste and intellectuals of Assam have called for a boycott of the Filmfare Awards to be held in Guwahati on February 15. In a press conference today senior artists and other notable personalities questioned the reasons for helping out the Filmfare Awards with state fund.
Manjit Mahanta, senior journalist and noted intellectual, told the media that the “corporate” Filmfare awards should not be held in Assam due to sensitivity of the period. “At a time when the entire Assamese community is up-in-arms against the CAA, I do not think that the Filmfare award should be held here.”
Addressing the press here today, Zerifa Wahid, noted actress, said, “The Filmfare Award that will be held in Assam is the actual traditional ceremony, being held for the last 65 years. Our artists will not have any role here. When the stars will descend…they will have specific performances.”
The Assam actress also opined that since the Assamese artistes will not be a part of the event, and they won’t be allowed to perform at the function, the artiste community of Assam does not stand to gain much from the event. Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Barua also calls over phone for cancelling the Filmfare Award function slated to be held in Guwahati.
